On the Creative Commons License, Original vs Remix, Money, and more

Creative Commons Nice interview to Joi Ito by a Macedonian newspaper on the Creative Commons License, the use of CC in a blog, content and the use by Professionals vs Amateurs, the concepts of Remix and Original, and more. To be read.
One question puzzles me:

You said that, now days, more and more people choose happiness over pleasure. How this reflects on Internet?

Joi’s answers puts Internet and money side by side. Nevertheless, the core of his answer is

that the Internet enables a new kind of sharing and collaboration that allows people who pursue happiness to produce things together.

If common and collaborative production is shared, is always shared the financial feedback of this production? The economic returns? In short, the returns of production investments of all kinds — work, time, energy, hopes and so on — are also shared?

  2. I think it depends… ;-)

This is a good point. I think that in many cases, there are corporations or individuals that use the money to run the infrastructure. In some cases they are not-for-profit and in some cases they are for-profit. In some cases the participants are even shareholders and in other cases the are "stakeholders" of a non-profit or public project. It's interesting, but I don't think that the economic return, either directly or indirectly are necessarily linked to people's willingness to participate in collaboration.

A few examples. My blog software company, Six Apart, is a for profit company that provides blogging services thru Live Journal and Vox. People feel like they are getting a service for free although it is their work that is generating the traffic that generates the ad revenue.

I am on the board of the Mozilla Foundation. There, we benefit from the open source. The money pays salaries for a handful of staff and the rest gets distributed to socially beneficial projects through a non-profit organization process.

I think one key is that it is all disclosed and trust is not broken. It's also interesting to note that changes are very difficult. For instance, there is a huge resistance on Wikipedia to any idea of ads. However, I think that if they had ads from the beginning, it might have been OK. Especially if the money went to buying servers, etc.

Anyway, great point and something to consider and try to understand better.

  5. Thank you Joi for answering me.:)

Point is: needless to say that is much better to be or to feel part of a mission, a project, a common work, to feel good about it. Moreover, it makes one feel better to know that what you are doing is useful to others, and not only to yourself.

A great economists such as J. K Galbraith already told me this some 12-13 years ago: it's the idea of common victory, of sharing results.

Nevertheless, do not tell me that Six Apart reinvests only in servers, services and to ameliorate the working environment. Like Yahoo!, you are a company. Also Mozilla is a program open source, yes, but not a NGO devoted to children of Nepal!
A handful of people lives out of this? What life standard they have?
And how much is useful in the USA to donate money not to pay taxes and to have a better image?

There are ways to make money also from Google ads, and Google makes more money than we do from ads. We are paying for the free program they give us.
I am grateful for that, but I know that they make a lot of money also out of this. It's enough to see what wonderful office have in London Victoria..

I mean: it's cheating, in a way, to give people the idea that they are sharing also the final return, and it's manipulative to tell young people that this final point (= money) is in a way common, as much as investments are.

Six apart is yours and in the end you will make money: of course, if I work for you I prefer doing it in a better environment, working together instead of working against one another and so on. I prefer being loyal and be, so to say, in peace with others and with myself, no doubt.

At the end of the day, you are the owner and I work for you.

Working "better" is also a way to compel people to produce more and better for others. I want to make sure the everybody knows that.

    http://babelfish.altavista.com/
